Challenges of Wind Power – Projects in Demanding Arctic Conditions

Hub Transport
The hubs were manufactured in Ii, northern Finland, approximately
500km from Uljabuouda. After the road study it was confirmed that
there was a suitable route for transporting the hubs by truck directly
from the workshop to the site. Hubs were delivered directly to the site
without storage at the site in order to save on handling and storage
costs. Also, the very limited space onsite required cargo to be delivered
only when needed.
Blade Transport
The 49.5m-long blades were manufactured in southern Poland. There
are many challenges associated in the transport of such long pieces
and so careful preparation was required. The optimal solution for
transporting the blades was to ship them in lots of nine + six blades by
charter vessel from the Polish port to Sweden. This was far more
economical than direct trucking. Also, as there was only limited space

As the most challenging part was the hill climb up the Uljabuouda Transport of the blades started with pre-carriage from the workshop to
mountain, this phase was given special attention from the very the port of Stettin in Poland, where they were stored and loaded on-
beginning. The plan was to use a heavy-duty dumper truck to assist board chartered coastal vessels at the time of shipment. Loading and

truck and heavy-duty tractor unit provided sufficient power and grip for
the extreme climb to the top. This operation was co-ordinated by The blades were then shipped from Stettin to the port of Skellefteå,
