Coming Clean on Fire Suppression

inert gaseous extinguishing agents on the market today. Another important feature of this edition is that it includes additional references to US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Significant New Alternatives Program (SNAP)-approved agents. SNAP evaluates and regulates substitutes for the ozone-depleting chemicals that are being phased out under the stratospheric ozone protection provisions of the Clean Air Act. Under the Clean Air Act, the EPA is authorised to identify and publish lists of acceptable and unacceptable substitutes for class I or II ozone-depleting substances. Sapphire, for example, is listed as ‘acceptable without restrictions’. Other sources of information are the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre Institute for Health and Consumer Protection’s European List of Notified Chemical Substances

However, in the aftermath of the Copenhagen Conference, we must now all wait and see – but, in the author’s opinion, not for too long. n
