non-intrusive pod includes sensors responsible for detecting the failure of flexible riser armour wires, as well as for recording riser motion, inclination and acoustic emission with the use of the following sensors:
• axial acceleration sensor – records the instantaneous movement of the riser along the riser axis;
• angular rate sensors of differing sensitivities – used to record the angular velocity of a rotation around the riser’s axial axis;
• microphone – records the acoustic emission during a wire break; and • inclinometers – used to identify angular rotation perpendicular to the riser axis.
The INTEGRIpod is hardwired, providing power and communication to record data in realtime and at a sufficiently high frequency to capture wire failure.
Sub-system 2 – End Termination INTEGRIpod
A second INTEGRIpod is mounted on the riser end termination that is rigidly connected to the vessel structure to measure the platform response.
Sub-system 3 – Central Processing System
The INTEGRIpod’s sensor is hardwired to a data acquisition unit. A software application developed by 2H processes the stored data and, with the aid of an algorithm, detects anomalies that may be associated with armour wire failures. Once such anomalies are present and the operator is made aware of a potential onset of failure process, the stored data can be accessed and downloaded to an onshore location and further post-processed and analysed.
