Wind turbines operate at approximately 85–90% efficiency. This means that in a year a wind turbine gearbox will be in operation for about 7,500 hours. These hours are typified by extreme temperatures, variable speeds, high loads and an environment that consists of rain, humidity, dust and anything else that Mother Nature can throw at it, for example, a cold climate or offshore conditions. During all of this, the wind turbine gear box and oil must operate at peak efficiency. Thus, the right choice of gear oil enabling the wind turbine to run is essential to the smooth operation of power generation equipment.

GEARMASTER ECO 320

This is one of a series of environmentally harmless lubricating and gear oils based on a synthetic ester. GEARMASTER ECO industrial gear oils are based on a special fully synthetic saturated ester.

The products of the GEARMASTER ECO series can be used in highly loaded spur and planetary gears as well as in plain and roller bearings. Due to their excellent biodegradability (>60% according OECD 301 C) GEARMASTER ECO products are recommended for use

in environmentally sensitive areas and in water conservation areas where ground and surface water can be compromised by oil leaks. GEARMASTER ECO products are based on polar saturated esters and have excellent wetting and cleaning properties (clean gear technology). They provide excellent wear protection and corrosion protection, high thermal stability, high oxidation stability and have a long lifespan.

GEARMASTER ECO products can decrease the oil sump temperature due to their low friction coefficient. They have been used with great success in wind turbine applications worldwide for many years as a high-performance, environmentally friendly gear oil. For example, the results of the FAG four-stage test (the wind turbine test for industrial gear oils created by the Schaeffler Group) demonstrate the excellent wear protection properties of GEARMASTER ECO oils. Their total rating of 1.0 (excellent) reflects the outstanding wear protection properties at different friction, temperature and load conditions. Special AW/EP additives guarantee high scuffing protection and also avoid micropitting failures. Gears and bearings are protected over the full temperature range and a long gearbox lifetime is ensured.

GEARMASTER ECO products are fully synthetic, biodegradable gear oils based with ISO VG 68–680. They are miscible and compatible with mineral oil and polyalphaolefin. In various tests they give the following results:

• •

micropitting test FZG GFT: LS >10, high protection; FZG GFT: C/8.3/+60ºC and +90ºC: load stage high;
