Energy for More People – Offshore Northern Seas Exhibition and Conference 2010

Over 49,700 delegates visited this year’s bi-annual Offshore Northern Seas (ONS) Exhibition, a rise of over 11,000 visitors on 2008’s event.

Commenting on the event – held between 24 and 27 August in Stavanger, Norway – Kjell Ursin-Smith, Chief Executive of the ONS Foundation, declared that he was “extremely pleased” with initial visitor feedback, and looked forward to further analysis of the event’s survey of visitors.

Partnership

This year marked the partnership of two major organisations. The Instituto Brasileiro de Petroleo (IBP) and The ONS Foundation signed a five-year co-operative agreement to strengthen mutual expertise with the exchange of industry information. This agreement will benefit the energy sector and public authorities worldwide by promoting improvements in quality. Mr Ursin-Smith said, “We see this agreement as a natural continuation of the important and well-functioning co-operation that already exists between our two nations”.

address to delegates. “It is important that the industry’s technical experts come together at events such as ONS. In the quest for safer ways of producing oil and gas, it is vital that you openly exchange ideas and inspire each other.” King Harald went on to address the need to find new clean ways of developing energy resources. “Today we recognise that there is an important relationship between energy and the environment. The industry has a clear focus on reducing the environmentally damaging effects of oil and gas production.” In conclusion, he remarked that “The way in which ONS showcases the complete energy picture is both stimulating and timely”.

Exhibition Parks

In a move to bring a ‘complete’ energy aspect to the exhibition, four exhibition parks were included at ONS 2010, highlighting the importance of alternative fuels. ONS Centre Court had its own technical programme based around the themes of the ONS Parks.

First established in 2004, the Innovation Park supplements the Innovation Awards. Twenty of Norway’s most innovative companies within the wider energy sector were featured on the stands.

Opening of the Offshore Northern Seas Exhibition and Conference 2010 “Over the years, the ONS event has developed into one of the world’s leading energy meeting places,” said His Majesty King Harald V of Norway in his opening

The Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) Park centred on the three themes of technology, economics and politics. “The industry, authorities, research institutes – and ONS – must succeed in positioning fossil energy sources at the interface between climate change challenges and the ever-increasing demand for energy,” explained Mr Ursin-Smith. “If the global industry is to

achieve this, the treatment of CO2 will be one of the decisive factors. We are taking

responsibility for demonstrating both how CO2 treatment can be part of the solution, and how organisations around the globe are working to

meet an ever-increasing energy demand while continuing to minimise emissions.”

This park showcased the importance of utilising natural renewable energy sources. Companies such as Troll WindPower, Marine Energy Test Centre, Trelleborg and Statkraft exhibited. The conference programme’s topics included the UK Government’s Offshore Wind Ambitions, European market opportunities for wave and tidal energy and China – The Next Offshore Wind Development Hotspot.

This year, the park explored the similarities between technologies developed for space and energy. Shared technological challenges include matters revolving around automation, harsh environments, new materials, energy solutions, remote operations, integrated operations, communications and surveillance. Trond Giske, Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry, noted that “The link between space and offshore is interesting because it may lead to the development of exciting technology and new business in Norway.”

Awards Innovation Awards

A major forum for exhibiting advances in new technology, this year’s ONS Innovation Awards had a total of 117 entries, which were all evaluated by the international Innovation Awards Committee.
