Dear readers I am pleased to introduce the Winter Edition of Exploration & Production – Oil & Gas Review.

As the incoming Editor, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my predecessor, Adam Green, for developing an ideal platform from which to disseminate timely information for the upstream oil and gas industry.

The exploration and production industry has been under the microscope this year since the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill at Macondo in the Gulf of Mexico. The US government put a moratorium on new deep sea exploration and drilling, not only affecting the Gulf but also activities in the Arctic region. Drilling in American, Canadian and Norwegian waters has been halted as new regulations are drafted. However, exploration in the Arctic waters around Russia and Greenland continue. With the moratorium in review and BP reassessing its processes, hopefully this will lead to improved safety measures for the industry and further advancements for deepwater drilling.

In this issue we cover a range of technical developments in the upstream oil and gas sector. In our Industry Outlook, Dr Sylvia Chan-Remilliard of HydroQual Laboratories and Golder Associates reports on how nanotechnology applications can benefit the oil and gas industry. Richard D’Souza and Shiladitya Basu of Granherne Americas give guidance on selecting the best floating platform for deepwater Gulf of Mexico fields. Elsewhere Eva María Navarro López from the University of Manchester examines how dynamic modelling can eliminate bit-sticking and optimise drilling operation conditions. This edition also includes a number of articles focusing on corrosion, namely submissions from ConocoPhillips and NRC Canada; health, safety and environment aspects of produced water; and advancements in information technology.

We hope you will enjoy the edition, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the authors for their contributions.
