In terms of investment, 2010 marked somewhat of a watershed – China surpassed the US in total renewable capital expenditure as it brought more projects online to help secure 15% of its energy requirements from renewable sources by 2020. With China widely tipped to achieve this, in 2011 the spotlight will focus more on the strategies of other leading countries as they seek to meet their own domestic targets.

At least 66 countries have established renewable energy targets to combat global warming by mitigating greenhouse gases as recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) – which aims for a percentage of electricity to come from renewable energy sources by 2020. Certainly, 2011 promises to be a captivating year.

This issue of Modern Energy Review maintains some focus on China. Within these pages, Rasmus Reinvang provides a detailed review of offshore wind farms in the country, while Haitao Yin and Feng Wang examine policy issues surrounding the development of renewable energy. Elsewhere, Peng Yuan and Xicheng Li explore the opportunities and challenges presented in China by recent advances in ocean renewable energy.

Modern Energy Review comprises many valuable contributions from experts within the wind, solar and marine energy sectors. On this note, I would like to extend an invitation to all leading authorities in the renewable energy field who would like to submit reviews or share their valuable experiences with the journal’s readership. Please contact me for further details.

I do hope you enjoy reading the first issue of 2011.

Welcome to Modern Energy Review, a journal dedicated to informing you of the latest trends, technological advances and policies across the global renewable energy spectrum.
