Spain and Italy registering marginal decreases and Turkey being the only country with a significant decline. If the trends in the first quarter were to continue for the rest of 2011, European imports would reach 76.8mtpa (104bcma) for the year as a whole. However, there are a number of uncertainties that could result in the growth slowing during the year.

0 LNG imports LNG = liquefied natural gas.

First, there are potential weaknesses in the demand for LNG, especially in Spain, where the government has implemented a policy of subsidising power generators who use locally produced coal. This will probably reduce the sector’s consumption of natural gas, which has been one of the main reasons for the growth in Spanish LNG demand since 2000. In addition, in March, natural gas started to flow through the Medgaz pipeline, which links Algeria directly to Spain. As the flow builds up, it will probably displace imported LNG.
