Cost-efficient Fire Detection to Secure Maximum Availability
offers the control of these functions integrated by communicating the status to the automatic and control system of the wind power plant.
For the extinguishing systems, the voting or ‘double knock’ function is often recommended and/or required to avoid unintentional automatic release. The voting or ‘double knock’ function means that the extinguishing system does not release until two or more detectors are in alarm. Nevertheless, in order to be ready for immediate release if the other alarm conditions are being fulfilled, the system starts up water pumps and opens main valves, etc., already on the first detector alarm. This reduces the time loss and ensures a quick suppression of the fire, thus minimising the danger and damage.
Another important feature that is strongly recommended for fire detection systems in wind power plants is the ability to make an analysis of past events in order to better understand given alarms. Therefore, the fire detection system should be able to store historical events and alarms so that the operator, if necessary, may alter the sensitivity of the alarm system.
Additionally, it is essential that all systems described above – as they are part of the total safety solution in wind power plants – are able to operate even if they have been exposed to fire.
Fire Detectors and Ancillaries
The most vital and sensitive parts of a fire detection system are the smoke/heat and fire sensing devices, which have to be exceptionally reliable as well as durable.
The detectors can be installed in the ceiling of the nacelle and in all electrical cabinets to give early alarms for protecting the critical parts in the nacelle. Smoke/heat detectors that are well proven and
The detectors should be designed and adopted for heavy duty applications and provide optimal solutions for all potential risks and locations, while at the same time minimising the number of unwanted alarms in the wind power plant. A recommendation is to invest in a high-end product as this ensures a more reliable fire detection system.
