Exploration & Production: The Oil And Gas Review 2006 - October 2006
As Chairman of the Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Association (PESA), I am pleased to have the opportunity to provide the foreword for Exploration and Production: The Oil and Gas Review 2006.

So far, 2006 has been a banner year for the oil-field service industry. PESA’s annual meeting, held in April, focused on the challenges of an energised market. The words were chosen carefully in selecting the theme, as it was a bit frightening to actually verbalise just how good things have been. Projections of future energy demand are a basis for optimism for the near and long terms; however, increased drilling activity and growing demand for oil-field products and services can also be an invitation to overbuild. We were reminded again that our industry is cyclical and that it was too much capacity that caused the crippling market crash of the early 1980s.

In addition, a number of our presenters pointed out the fact that there is a growing need for advanced technology to help us alleviate our shrinking productive capacity. Much of the increased demand for technology will need to be met by the oil-field service sector and this, I believe, is an area in which we excel.

PESA has and will continue to dedicate itself to making a contribution to the success of its member companies. PESA’s meeting programmes are designed to provide various perspectives on where our industry is headed and provide exposure to industry experts and key customers. PESA also invests time and effort in helping to provide background knowledge of the oil and gas sector to foreign-service officers so that they may better assist its members in locations worldwide. PESA’s newly formed Young Professionals Committee will help find new ways of attracting and retaining the talent that will be the future leaders of the energy services industry.

Jack Moore is Chairman of the Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Association (PESA); Senior Vice President, Cameron Drilling and Production Systems, Cameron International Corporation; and President of Drilling & Production Systems.
