Sulphur Handling, Forming, Storage and Shipping
Gordon J Johnson

Originally printed in:
Hydrocarbon World - Volume 4 Issue I

Sour gas and sour heavy oil deposits account for an increasing proportion of new petroleum production worldwide. The efficient recovery, forming and shipping of sulphur produced as part of the processing of these resources is often fundamental to the economic development of these new fields. The volatile nature of the sulphur markets further complicates the evaluation of sulphur management options. The selection of the preferred option requires consideration of a number of forming, storage and shipping options that best ensure the economical recovery and marketing of the petroleum resource.

This article provides an evaluation of commercially available forming options, as well as an assessment of the shipping, storage and re-melting operations that are in use today. The evaluation includes consideration of reliability, versatility, space and operating requirements. Consideration is also given to sulphur quality issues, as well as environmental concerns, which influence the selection of the preferred sulphur management strategy.
